Collection: Cleats
Whether you're a dedicated road cyclist, mountain biker, or indoor cyclist, cleats are the crucial connection between your cycling shoes and pedals . They ensure your feet lock securely into the pedals, leading to greater efficiency, power, and control while cycling. With the right type of cleats, you'll enjoy a more comfortable and safe ride.
What are cleats?
Cleats , also called cleats , are small plastic or metal plates that you attach to the bottom of your cycling shoes. They are part of a clipless pedal system, which allows you to click your foot into the pedal.
Using cleats offers several advantages:
- Better power transfer: you can push and pull the pedal
- More stability and control at high speeds or technical terrain
- More efficient cycling position due to fixed foot position
- Reduced risk of injury with correctly adjusted position
Different systems and types of cleats
Depending on the type of bicycle and pedal system, different types of cleats are available. The most common are:
1. SPD cleats (Shimano Pedaling Dynamics)
Commonly used in mountain biking, gravel cycling, and spinning. SPD cleats are small, metal, and offer a secure click with a little float for knee comfort. Suitable for off-road use because they are recessed into the shoe, making them easy to walk on.
2. SPD-SL cleats (for racing bikes)
Larger and wider than SPD cleats, specifically designed for road cyclists seeking maximum power transfer. They offer less freedom of movement and are particularly suitable for long road rides. SPD-SL cleats are available in various colors and clearances:
- Yellow: 6° float (most used)
- Blue: 2° float
- Red: 0° float (fixed)
3. Look Keo cleats
A popular alternative to SPD-SL, with similar performance and variations. Also available in three float options: gray (4.5°), black (0°), and red (9°). Compatible with Look Keo pedals.
4. Speedplay cleats
Double-sided click-in and click-out, with plenty of adjustable freedom of movement. Often used by professional cyclists.
When should you replace your cleats?
Cleats wear out over time, especially if you walk a lot or train intensively. Signs that you need to replace them:
- More difficult or looser to click in and out
- Visible wear or deformation
- Play while cycling
- Discomfort or pain in knees/feet
On average, plates last 5,000–8,000 kilometers, depending on use and weather.
Buying cleats? Here's what to look for:
- Which pedal system do you use? SPD, SPD-SL, Look, or Speedplay?
- How much freedom of movement (float) do you want?
- Are the cleats compatible with your cycling shoes and pedals?
- Do you use the bike off-road, on the road or indoors?
Also pay attention to the correct mounting position: correct cleat adjustment is important for comfort, injury prevention and performance.
